A Wednesday Addams Day of the Dead

christina ricci

Wednesday Addams

As a youngster, the original Addams Family was one of my favorite shows on TV – I wanted to grow up to be the beautiful Morticia all sleek in her spider dress and darkly sarcastic. When they made the newer movie with Christina Ricci cast as Wednesday, I thought she nailed the part as no one else could have. And she has such great character to her face with that long forehead and those round deep eyes, that she begged to be painted.

A Day of the Dead Family Portrait

Recently I was commissioned to do a “Day Of The Dead” family portrait and I couldn’t have enjoyed painting these beautiful beings anymore than I did. I love working on commissioned portraits – it brings me back into contact with everyday humanity.

In Honor Of Prince, The Purple One

Prince, The Purple One By Patrushka 600pix

Sadly, our iconic rockers seem to be dropping like flies lately…

The death of Prince (Rogers Nelson) was a real shocker, especially falling on the heels of Bowie. I had to honor him with a Day Of The Dead tribute, complete with purple and paisleys. May he be dancing and strutting on that stage in the afterlife, there’s a party going on up there.

“Dearly beloved,
We are gathered here today
To get through this thing called life.

Electric word life
It means forever and that’s a mighty long time
But I’m here to tell you
There’s something else
The afterworld…”

A Beautiful David Bowie, The One and Only

Beautiful Bowie by Patrushka 600px

My humble portrait homage to the late and great ultimate artist David Bowie, who rocked our world and changed our culture forever. Expressing feelings of his love and our love; inspired by The Day of The Dead blessings and his song “We Are The Dead”. The floral motif is Japanese inspired because Bowie had a love their aesthetics.

Something kind of hit me today
I looked at you and wondered if you saw things my way

People will hold us to blame
It hit me today, it hit me today

We’re taking it hard all the time
Why don’t we pass it by?
Just reply, you’ve changed your mind
We’re fighting with the eyes of the blind
Taking it hard, taking it hard…

For Celia Cruz: On The Day of the Dead

Ode To Celia - Patrushka-11

A  Day Of The Dead tribute to the incredible Celia Cruz, well-known as the queen of salsa. She was a Cuban salsa singer and performer. One of the most popular salsa artists of the 20th century, she earned twenty-three gold albums and was a recipient of the National Medal of Arts.

She is decked out in full regalia with a classic Day Of The Dead headdress. The Day of the Dead is a festive holiday celebrated in Mexico and other parts of the world during November 1 & 2. Even though this coincides with the Catholic holiday called All Soul’s & All Saint’s Day, the indigenous people have combined this with their own ancient beliefs of honoring their deceased loved ones.

A portrait inspired by a woman named Simone, her beauty, her favorite flower – a peony, and her favorite color – mint green. Embellished with vintage design, fashion and the Day of the Dead. And as usual the wood grain playing within the flesh…

Geisha – The word consists of two kanji, 芸 (gei) meaning “art” and 者 (sha) meaning “person” or “doer”.

The most literal translation of geisha into English would be “artist,” “performing artist,” or “artisan.”

Size: 14″ x 19″ (framed)

Medium: Gouache on paper, varnished

Since I so often post art as soon as I photograph it, it often isn’t seen with the frame. So I thought I’d post Day of the Lana complete in her vintage frame, below.

She is all ready for a Halloween exhibit (along with 4 other pieces of mine), at ACCI Gallery, in Berkeley.

Hallowed and Haunted opens on October 11th, with a reception and costume party/contest at 6 pm.  The show will be on view through Nov. 10th, 2013.

Hope to see you there!

Lupe and Her Sombrero •

Title: Lupe, A Mexicali Girl

Medium: Gouache & watercolor on paper envelope

This piece was created for the wonderful Mail Me Art 3 exhibit and accompanying book.

“Mail Me Art is a project that has brought together an international community of artists and illustrators, amateur and professional alike, through art in the form of mail. The posted package itself is the work of art and, unlike a traditional letter or parcel, it is intended to be received and admired for it’s own sake. While a normal item of mail fulfils a practical purpose such as delivering a bill, a letter from a loved one, a notice from an employer, or a gift sent by a friend, with mail art the box or envelope becomes the centre of attention instead.”Via Mail Me Art
