In Honor Of Prince, The Purple One

Prince, The Purple One By Patrushka 600pix

Sadly, our iconic rockers seem to be dropping like flies lately…

The death of Prince (Rogers Nelson) was a real shocker, especially falling on the heels of Bowie. I had to honor him with a Day Of The Dead tribute, complete with purple and paisleys. May he be dancing and strutting on that stage in the afterlife, there’s a party going on up there.

“Dearly beloved,
We are gathered here today
To get through this thing called life.

Electric word life
It means forever and that’s a mighty long time
But I’m here to tell you
There’s something else
The afterworld…”

 – Lyrics from “Let’s Go Crazy” by Prince –

A Crazy Floral

Crazy Floral by Patrushka 650pix

I had an urge to put my fingers to some collage, as it’s been quite awhile. This time I used only paper which I had painted myself, to ensure that the colors won’t fade as they might with found images from magazines. It was rather fun to return to my old love, am hoping to try some cityscapes with this technique in the future.

A Young Trunk In Marin

Young Trunk by Patrushka 650pix

Tree Art

Every so often we escape to the woods out near Marin, California, which we are lucky enough to live relatively close to. There are awesome huge Redwoods everywhere and mossy growth in the winter and spring. It’s very relaxing to just sit and do small studies and watercolors of nature’s little beauties. The velvet moss on the side of this young seedling caught my eye.

“Oh redwood tree
Please let us under
When we were young we used to go
Under the redwood tree.
And it smells like rain
Maybe even thunder
Won’t you keep us from all harm
Wonderful redwood tree.”

 – Lyrics by Van Morrison –

An Alley At Night In Florence, Italy

After leaving a bar late one night during travels in Italy, I stumbled upon this alley with cool yellow lighting and a blue lit window. Had to capture this little piece of a cityscape the best I could.

Lady Agatha

Lady Agatha - Patrushka

Meet Agatha (played by Saoirse Ronan) from the film – The Grand Budapest Hotel.  I loved her character in the movie and all the directorial works of Wes Anderson.

I must say, I find that girl utterly delightful. Flat as a board, enormous birthmark the shape of Mexico over half her face, sweating for hours on end in that sweltering kitchen, while Mendl, genius though he is, looms over her like a hulking gorilla. Yet without question, without fail, always and invariably, she’s exceedingly lovely.  – Quote from the film, by M. Gustave

Black Jesus Reprinted In New Bible

black jesus

I am happy to report my black velvet painting – “The Real Jesus” was included in the printing of The African American Bible’s recent edition.
Now if only all the bibles showed him as black (or at least dark skinned as we know he was… ) -that would be amazing progress!

Bit by bit, baby steps are better than none…

Why don’t you come with me little girl
On a magic carpet ride…”

This is a small watercolor inspired by an Emily Dickinson poem.

“Hope” is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops – at all …

A Hamadryad

Title: Hamadryad

Dryads, like all nymphs, were supernaturally long-lived and tied to their homes, but some were a step beyond most nymphs. These were the hamadryads who were an integral part of their trees, such that if the tree died, the hamadryad associated with it died as well. For these reasons, dryads and the Greek gods punished any mortals who harmed trees without first propitiating the tree-nymphs.
