The War On Women - a body of art addressing abortion and abuse
Art depicting the emotional trauma of illegal abortions, abuse, sexual assault and domestic violence. These portraits convey the long overdue need for equal rights for women - they should not be victims to be hunted or forced into giving birth.

In late 1963, Annie Ernaux, the first in her family to attend college, was months away from graduating when she learned she was pregnant. “Happening,” published in France in 2000 and in English a year later, is a memoir of her race to abort without dying or landing in prison. It was about a feeling of “abandonment”, she says. “There were thousands who had been through secret abortions, I wanted to recreate the truth of it exactly as it was in the moment, ridding myself of any knowledge of the fight for women’s rights that would follow. Because in 1963, 1964 when it happened to me, it was unthinkable to imagine abortion would one day be authorized, doctors wouldn’t even say the word.”
