abandoned places and scenes
Once We Were Here contains landscape and urban scenes, occasionally with a surreal juxtaposition. Often of abandoned places or forgotten things, void of human life. Sometimes with an apocalyptic feel, or a future world in which the environment has been altered by humanities presence. Many questions were inspirations – who lived here? Where have they gone? And often an appreciation for long gone vintage styles in architecture or rustic hand painted signage.

Smith Tire
Size: 30″ x 40″
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
This is a large piece inspired by an old tire shop I stumbled upon on one of my walks around New Orleans. It was peeling paint in all the right ways… Recently, I was so surprised to run across a bit about the owner of this wonderful place, via National Geographic –
“There was never any question from me about what to do after Katrina,” said Carroll Herbert, the owner of Smith Tire on the Ninth Ward’s St. Claude Avenue in 2006. “I came right back and opened up.”
