Druid Wood
Druid Wood
Medium: Gouache on cradled birch panel
Size: 16’ high x 20” wide x 1” deep
Inspiration: Druids were people in ancient Britain and France who served a wide variety of roles — “philosophers, teachers, judges, the repository of communal wisdoms about the natural world and the traditions of the people, and the mediators between humans and the gods”. Druids were concerned with the natural world and its powers, and considered trees sacred, particularly the oak. Druidism can be described as a shamanic religion, as it relied on a combination of contact with the spirit world and holistic medicines to treat illnesses. As Christianity spread throughout Europe, druidism gradually faded away.
